Linnunsanat (Bird's words) - Sini Koskelainen
Today (14.5.2022) is the day of Finnish folk music and folk dance, so I wanted to share this song with you! 💛
To be deeply connected with nature and bringing or creating music in nature is very close to my heart. In nature the music was originally born and developed. That's where we were born.
In the old days in Finland when you were about to enter the forest, you needed to first ask a permission for it, no matter what you were going to do there. The forest, its inhabitants, Spirits of nature were respected and it was considered important to live in harmony with the forest. Gifts could also be left for the forest. I have also started to practice this ritual or habit nowadays, ranging from sprinkling small nuts to earth to collecting trash and singing a song dedicated for the forest.
I support revitalizing folklore and sharing knowledge with all nations, not just those in a small district. I am fascinated by pagan beliefs, rituals, myths and poems and they often serve as a source of inspiration in my music.
I believe that by singing in nature and about nature, we can strongly connect with our roots. I believe that eternity lives in all of us and voice is the channel from which it can naturally get pulped out. Especially in nature.
This song is where I sing in a nature reserve for bird souls. The melody is from a song created by Magdalena Mölsä aka Vaskilintu and me, made into an old Bird's Words spell poem (author unknown).
"Anna kumpu kultiasi
Metsä mulle lintujasi
Siipiäsi, sulkiasi
Päästäpä parahiasi
Sinijalka siiperöinen
Punajalka puiperoinen
Kule kohti rihmojani
Kohti kultalankojani
Tie on tehty tullaksesi
Tie on tehty, (rata) rakettu
Tulla kullaisna keränä
Hopeaisna sykkyränä"
Some kind of translation of the text that I made:
“Give hillock your loved ones
Forest your birds
Your wings, your feathers
Let your best ones come
Blue-footed winged
Red-footed winged
Walk towards my yarns
Towards my golden threads
The road is made to come
The road is made, the route is built
To come as a golden ball
As a silver kink”
What does folk music or folklore mean to you? 💛
